Description
The POM routine—Prepare, Observe, Move—is a fundamental driving procedure taught to learner drivers across the UK. It ensures safe, controlled movement from a stationary position, whether pulling away from the roadside, exiting a parking bay, or rejoining traffic.
- Prepare: This stage involves getting the vehicle ready to move. In a manual car, the driver selects first gear, sets the gas, and finds the biting point. In an automatic, it means selecting ‘Drive’ and checking readiness. The handbrake remains on until the car is fully prepared.
- Observe: Before moving, the driver must carry out full observations. This includes checking all mirrors—interior and door mirrors—and looking over the right shoulder to check the blind spot. The driver assesses traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, and any other hazards. If necessary, a signal is given to alert others.
- Move: Once it’s safe, the driver releases the handbrake smoothly and begins to move off, adjusting speed and steering as needed
