Description
Most manual cars have five or six forward gears, plus reverse. Lower gears (1st and 2nd) provide more torque and are used for moving off, climbing hills, or driving slowly. Higher gears (4th, 5th, 6th) are for cruising at speed and improving fuel efficiency.
To change gear, the driver presses the clutch pedal to disengage the engine, selects the desired gear using the gear stick, then smoothly releases the clutch while applying the accelerator. Timing and coordination are key—poor gear changes can cause jerky movement or engine strain.
Manual driving offers greater engagement and control, especially in challenging conditions like snow or steep terrain. It’s also useful for learning mechanical sympathy and understanding vehicle dynamics.
